Iron Chef Contest comes to Gethsemane

Gethsemane’s Middle School students (grades 6-8) have the opportunity to select  electives.  Mrs. Hoffman offered a cooking class this past quarter.  The class proved very popular and because eighth graders have first choice on the electives, all students in this class were in the eighth grade.

Mrs. Hoffman felt the students were doing so well with her class, she would have the final be an “Iron Chef” contest.  Students were allowed to work in small groups or work alone.  Each “group” had to prepare a main dish, an appetizer, and a dessert

Much like the contestants on Iron Chef, students were judged on various aspects such as; appearance, taste, and if the dishes were done on time and presented properly to the judges.

There were six “groups” who presented their dishes to the four judges.  The judges were:

Mrs. Hoffman
Pastor Troy Schmidt
Wendell Robson (Principal)
Claudia Grijalva (Daycare Director)

Unlike most contests, the students helped out their competitors.  When one team did not have a dessert prepared, another team gave them ingredients to make a dessert. Students helped one another arrange their dishes for presentation  and they all cleaned up together.

Like all contests, one team won first place with the other teams behind  them. Regardless of the their standing in the contest, all the students prepared some terrific dishes.  Congratulations to all the cooking students for a job well done!
